Wind, sun and saltwater break down the coating on the garage door. Eventually, nothing remains but a chalky residue, and rust begins. Let’s prevent damage with a bit of cleaning with items you already have around the house.
Twice a year, choose a sunny day. Clean your garage door with a mild detergent and water to remove the salt, oils -like fingerprints-, grime and dirt.
All you need is a bucket of soapy water and a soft cloth. Dish soap is a terrific choice, and an old t-shirt or towel works well. A cotton mop is great for reaching the corners. Do not use a heavy duty scrubber or brush because those will scratch the surface.
When you finish washing, rinse it and let it dry.
Next, apply car wax to your dry garage door. Follow the directions on your wax. When it dries, wipe it away to reveal the shine. If you have a buffer, you can make your door sparkle.
If you can only manage this chore once per year, make it part of your spring cleaning ritual. A clean garage door lasts longer than a dirty one.
If you already have rust, call for an estimate for replacing panels or the door.
